Gone are the days where holidays abroad were considered to be an unaffordable luxury for the majority of British people.
Due to the ready availability of cheap UK flights from the airports, serving the majority of major cities in the UK, more and more people today are able to travel to all parts of the globe.
It is now often said that it is cheaper for a family of four to spend their well earned two week annual holiday in the sunnier climes of Spain or Greece, than it is to stay in the UK in one of the holiday camps, which were so popular in the 60's and 70's.
As a reflection of today's popularity of cheap flights, there are now a large number of so-called budget airlines offering regular, no-frills flights from every UK airport to a number of European destinations. Often at a fraction of the cost of a train ticket for a shorter journey across the UK. It is however prudent to bear in mind that many of the costs of these flights are literally only the price of the flight, and are subject to the inevitable extras, such as for carrying your luggage, airport taxes and even debit card charges (cheek!).
Despite all these extras, the dream of being able to board a plane in rainy England and to be sat on a sun soaked beach a few hours later is a glorious concept for most people. All for less than the price of a decent raincoat!
