Airports in UK suffered their biggest annual decline in over 65 years in 2009. During the recession, 7.4% fewer passengers purchased a plane ticket in the UK. Special offers and holiday bundles were not enough to save the industry from its worst year in decades.

UK domestic travel was also down by a staggering 8 percent. Industry insiders have determined that the decline in holiday traffic is primarily to blame for the staggering losses, with charter flights off by 17% in 2008.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), an agency of the Department of Commerce, travel and tourism in the US declined dramatically during the recession. The slide began in the fourth quarter of 2009 after two quarters of double digit growth. Why did it happen all at once?

As you may know, the travel sector of the economy includes many disparate industries from airlines to car rental agencies to hotels and motels. And when one of these industries suffers they all do. Price increases of 7 percent at the end of 2004 are primarily responsible for decreased travel and tourism.

The single largest contributor was the increase in air transportation costs, which rose by more than nine percent in the quarter. Not surprisingly, when fewer people started flying because of high fees, hotel rooms and car rental agencies were forced to raise their prices to make up for the lack of demand. In 2009, the number of internal visitors fell to its lowest level since 9/11. A thirteen percent decline in guests in the fourth quarter of 2009 was the worst in more than a decade. And unfortunately, the UK was one of the last of the European countries to emerge from recession.

Due to the global recession, the number of visitors to New York City fell for the first time in nearly a decade last year.
